Nights in the Gardens of Spain

Joyeuse Marche was considered a masterpiece of high fantasy and according to Debussy, filled to overflowing with bold and colourful innovations and with the good-natured humour characteristic of Chabrier. Manuel de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain was originally a set of nocturnes that evolved into a three-movement set of exotic symphonic impressions for piano and orchestra. Gottschalk’s Grande Tarantelle is a toe-tapping and fast dance with gymnastic pianistic flourishes. Foster Gallery is a brilliantly coloured confection based on the songs and dances of Stephen Foster. It opens with Camptown Races and this theme recurs throughout the work, interspersed with other songs including Swanee River and Oh Susanna. Humour, quirkiness and sentimentality all rub shoulders in this attractive and lively piece.
